Course Description
During this 4 hour 20 minute webinar, Dr. Emily Plowman will provide an in-depth discussion with practical applications for clinical report writing on how to differentiate normal vs. functional vs. disordered bulbar function. This program will provide an overview of the clinical dysphagia assessment continuum and highlight differences between screening and assessment methods. It will then deconstruct the traditional clinical swallowing evaluation (CSE) and provide an evidence based review on each component and the relative utility that can be gained from each traditional component (patient history, oral motor exam, swallow trials). In each component an overview of the relative swallowing relevance, ability to directly or objective measure, and evidence base for its inclusion will be reviewed. A concentration on how to objectively and objective probe the bulbar mechanism to provide useful information regarding an individuals physiologic capacity to swallow safely and effectively will be highlighted with specific clinical report writing templates provide for your CSE.

Read MoreDr. Plowman goes through the components of a traditional clinical evaluation systematically to assess relevance to swallowing, evidence, availability of normative data, subjectivity vs. objectivity, and if we can directly assess what we think we're assessing. It's a great review of standard procedures and provides a rationale for completing each component of the examination. Additionally, Dr. Plowman encourages use to add objective measures and provides normative data that we can use to strengthen our assessment of the bulbar mechanism. It's a great course with tons of practical information. It took me longer than the 4 hours because I was pausing to screen shot and take notes!
